Now, it's a given that they're more well known outside the franchise, but that has more to do with the pokemania than with the quality of the design. Now, the argument as to which region has the best designed pokemon IS in fact very subjective, and the fandom is often divided on that matter, with most favorites being from different gens each.
But yes, they're among the most well known pokemon outside the fanbase, in which case, you ARE acknowledging that it's trying to pander to people who stopped playing the games since Gen 1, basically contradicting yourself altogether.
