The northern one is: it's the Uygur and Tibet "autonomous" regions: pseudo-independent (and I use that term very loosely) regions of China that aren't really Chinese but still owned by them. The Uygur territory is dangerous because of semi-isolated terrorist activity (the Uygurs are Muslim); and the Tibet territory WOULD be as safe as any other except for the fact that China's claimed Tibetan borders breaches into Kashmir, which is a hotly contested hinterland of India and Pakistan and is a major hotspot for violence (there was just a rebel attack on 40+ Indian soldiers like a week ago).

Modern China's really boring and I hope to never see it in a Pokémon game. That south part from Shanghai to Haikou (going out to Hunan for those famous mountains from Avatar) would be passable as a region but not great. It would be cool to base a pokemon game on Journey To The West, though.

Unova was obviously more than just NYC. Yes it's New York geographically but it also represents America as a whole with e.g. Clay obviously being Texan, Alder being Native American inspired, Nimbasa being Las Vegas and Humilau practically being proto-Alola, etc.

New York is a pretty good basis for a region tho, and I'm sure we'll get more states, I doubt it's meant to be the sole US region. Granted I think we'd probably get one more at best tho. Might be biased but Texas would be good to represent the south. It's huge obviously. I don't care for California but it ain't a bad choice either to represent the west coast.
