Yes. Most game music is bland at this point.

Limits beget creativity. Being able to do anything means you will do anything which includes the bad. Beyond Gen 5 is fine enough music but the majority of it no longer sounds like it belongs in Pokémon at all.

Even the remixes.

It was going down in gen 5, but it hit rock bottom during 3ds yeah. I mean, gen 3 is really the only gen with relistenable music. Gen 1 and 2 have some awesome iconic tunes, but gen 3 has a soundtrack that's a bit more than "just video game music", when you take into account R/S/E and the Gamecube games.

I honestly think the abysmal soundtracks are a big part of why gen 6 and 7 were so soulless. While a lot of the songs are unambitious and paint-by-numbers as fuck, a fair number of them could have been passable if it weren't for the dogshit soundfont.

If anything, blame Shota Kageyama for doing generic orchestral stuff like Kalos routes, Zinnia battle and the entirety of LGPE's OST. Minako Adachi is mixed.

Hitomi Sato was in X and Y. Did Shalour City, Coumarine City, Geosenge Town.

And both were in SM. Sato did Kukui's theme, Hau's theme and battle, Festival Plaza theme, Ten Carat Hill, Heahea City, Paniola Town, Poke Pelago, Royal Avenue, Poni Wilds, Vast Poni Canyon.

Ichinose did Gladion stuff, Wild Pokemon arrangement, Trial theme, Kahuna battle, Konikoni City, UB Battle, and Tapu battle arrangement.

Explains a lot. Shalour and Coumarine are my favorite ones. Though Snowbelle and Anistar were also pretty good. Don't care for the route and battle themes.

Nothing wrong with orchestrated music anon.
What matters is that the compositions can still manage to create a spesific mood. The issue come from when composers look to make a background soundtrack that doesn't "get in the way", and you get the same kind of dull ambience you'd hear in a movie.
