Other than the fact that most towns and locations were small, completely irrelevant, or you were railroaded by the plot to explore, I don’t know.

None of them were significant enough or had anything special going on. When you’re playing the main game, most of them are empty or have NPCs that say absolutely nothing worth a conversation. Can’t even remember most of the names for these places. What makes things worse is that the trials and Grand Trials take place outside the towns besides Hala’s, so they aren’t even important in that sense.

I played through Sun twice and Ultra Sun once.
The only real place that I truly remember is Po Town.
It was the COOLEST base of operations for a villain team. Instead of some secret base with all kinds of meaningless gadgets and warp pads, they just ransacked and took over an entire town, particularly a mansion and a Pokemon Center.

When they first showed the trailer for SM, I thought for sure you'd be able to surf between islands. That would have been great. What's even the point of having the four islands if you can't? It seems segmented for no reason.

Too many different styled locations so they all blend in. More generic islands with larger more expanded unique locations is far more memorable then throwing every idea for a location all together.
