How the fuck do you guys love gen 5 so much? I mean I get it had a decent storyline but the handholding was so horrendous it made me want to stop playing.

Hoenn, Kanto, Sinnoh and Johto were great because you could actually fucking explore. Knock on Diamond and Pearl all you want; the world of those games actually felt like a living, breathing world rather than a giant hallway.

The only examples of actual exploration in gen 5 that I remember were the fact that you could surf behind your house once you got that HM, and that one place where you could use dive. But you know what? In Kanto, you could also surf behind your house and instead of leading to a small enclosed area like in Unova, it lead to an entire portion of the fucking game, and in Hoenn, you could dive in a bunch of different places and end up in other places.

Gen 5 *also* had exploration. A bit under half of the region was post-game material, so that means you get to explore and play more even after you beat the league. The game did not hold your hand, although I can understand the doctors inside or at the entrance of the dungeons were BS (albeit they'd streamline your exploration from time to time) and how the E4 had only 4 Pokémon. Yes, those were bullshit.

But the leaders were important, the locations were memorable, it had an amazing soundtrack, and they actually tried to have a decent plot. It was not the best, but it was the best Pokémon has ever had. Did I mention the routes did have extra things to explore, for you to deviate at your leisure?

But then gen 6 came in and shat all over it.

The battles/menus feel more satisfying than any other generation and it has my favourite new selection of Pokemon. I also feel that it was actually one of the more living regions as the (important) characters in it were actually doing things beyond just waiting in their designated spot for a battle and then never being seen again. Little things like all of the gym leaders having other jobs, the Champion having an actual identity instead of being some mystery figure or seeing characters reach conclusions that aren't strictly battle oriented (Bianca/N) went a long way towards making the region feel more real than others.

It's not so much the numerous scripted events the people think of when they think gen 5 but rather the content behind it. PWT, Black City/White Forest's expansion and Tower/Treehollow, exploring the other half of Unova after finishing the game, finding Cynthia, going back to fight the actual Champion Alder. BW and BW2 had some of the most fulfilling postgame content and the richest plot we've seen in any game to date.

The rest of the games had a slightly worse story than gen 5, but still, edgy anime bull crap does not constitute a good story and just because gen 5 did it relatively well does not make it a great story

Exactly. I think the whole gen 5 thing is due nostalgia, since it was probably the first game most 2000fags played when they were kids. There's no other explanation, gen 5 was mediocre at best.

Y'all don't even know what that word means anymore.

Gen V was innovative. It tried something no other generation has before. It has a plot that wasn't blatantly predictable a summarized in the sentences or less. The first set of games introduced the most new Pokemon ever, improved the way TMs worked, and distributed Pokemon throughout the game in a way that didn't prioritize other generations or feel empty or bland.

The second games were the first to actually act as a true sequel, have the widest Pokemon variety ever seen in a game prior right from the offset, actually added new routes and explored the region in a new way, introduced the most diverse post game content ever, and still included a story that couldn't be summarized in three sentences or less.

Generation 5 is the best the series has ever offered and I've been playing since Red and Blue in 1997.

Had Gen 7 introduced 50 more Pokemon, doubled the map size, and started with a fully fleshed out Ultra Sun/Moon story, it might have been able to touch Gen 5, but nothing else comes close.

I'm playing Black 2 right now and something I hate is the constant NPCs interruption and obligatory events like Pokewood or PWT, It is the consequence pf a heavy storyline I think. Gym Leaders and E4 are pathetic in the first game, and the Challenge Mode its just like others games with 4 Pokémon for the last Leader and 5 for the E4, but with items. I like the region, routes, cities, dungeons, and music a lot, and seasons just make it better. Cool mons and also Rosa, best girl

Gen 5 not so much a straight line more of a twig with lil branches you go from point A to B sure but you also have nice extra areas like the forests desert resort a few caves for TMs rare pokes (except moor of icirrus which has nothing) other than that the gyms were pretty tough this time around never had this much challenge with the gym leaders since emerald but just like that game the last gym leaders got real easy as your team got bigger. The story was passable but the best pokemon had to offer (pokemon stories were never good and black 2 is a saturday morn. Cartoon) my only gripes with gen 5 is the atrocious art direction and how bland it looks and... Sprite tweening ...why... Especially after HGSS stunning visuals.

In this case, it would be reasonable cause the closest thing Gen 1 and 2 have to a story is beating the shit out of team rocket. It could be easily removed out of these games and it would have no impact whatsoever, especially for Gen 2. This is a classic example of having your judgement clouded by nostalgia.
