The funny thing is, I've never heard a legitimate rebuttal as to why it's seemingly okay for the Johto gym leaders to use so many Kantomons. Keep in mind i'm using the gym leaders use because they're meant to represent the region itself. Of the 23 Pokemon all the gym leaders use, only 4 of them are from Johto. Whitney's Miltank, Jasmine's Steelix, Pryce's Piloswine, and Clair's Kingdra. That's roughly 17%. Compare it to Hoenn's gym leaders which use roughly 72% Hoennmons and Sinnoh which uses roughly 50% Sinnohmons, hell I think Sinnoh actually had MORE Johto representation than Johto did.

Johto introduces 100 new Pokemon to Kanto's 151 so the occurrence of Kantomons should be still common, but not THAT common. What should be closer to a 50% range is cut in half. So yes, the Pokemon distribution was crap. There's way more Kanto representation then there should be in Johto. This was an intentional move by Game Freak to avoid people complaining that their favorite Pokemon weren't in the new games. It was also done to make the new Pokemon more rare because they made less and didn't know how well received they would be. They tried to justify this under the guise that there were "recently discovered" when each following game uses the exact same gimmick but actually makes their region's Pokemon more common in that specific region so it's clear that their first attempt at doing it was their worst and the fact that people defend it years later is laughable and proof that people will defend anything with enough nostalgia. The entire generation was them walking on eggshells to avoid messing with the massive popularity gen 1 had and considering pokemania was already dying before gen 3, that mindset resulted in people not caring about Johto as much when it was new because it felt more like an extension of Kanto instead of a brand new region. Kanto returning was a selling point ffs.

Honestly It wasn't really the distribution that made people really like it imo.
They added so much, gifted egg, headbutting trees, interesting incounters like sudowoodo and shiny gyarados, Alph ruins was neat I guess...
I could go on but they really dropped the ball by not having things like phanphy and tediursa earlier and 2 fire types that aren't even in the region !
But it's still great to me, HGSS is my favorite game.

Gold and Silver were originally meant to be Pokémon 2, the last games. It was planned as a direct sequel of the first games so a lot of things should remain familiar with the players, including most of the original mons.
You see, the entire premise of these games is about 100 new pokémon being discovered in Johto and new theories comming up on how Pokémon reproduce.
GameFreak addressed this situation ny making these new mons rare and hard to find; some are nocturnal, some appear only during migrations, etc.

Kanto Pokemon represent Johto because they're equally as much Johto Pokemon as they are Kanto Pokemon. Johto Pokemon != gen 2 Pokemon.

Returning to a game with less mechanics is a worse experience than playing them first, though. I started with, and enjoyed, Gen 1, but returning to them feels a bit lackluster, since I'm adjusted to the quality-of-life additions of newer games. I agree with most of the rest of your post, though.

Nice headcanon m8. The only games that Game Freak went into thinking it would be their last was Diamond and Pearl and that was due to the declining sales the series was getting in the early 00's, something that started with Gold and Silver which failed to gain the same popularity as gen 1.

Kanto Pokemon ARE Johto Pokemon. The regions are right next to each other. Why the fuck would they use completely different sets of Pokemon? The new Pokemon are there as rare things to find for trying out new mechanics, not to have the same distribution as gen 1 Pokemon.

This is why it's a complaint only underagefags have. They assume GSC is supposed to treat the new Pokemon as pointless reskins of old Pokemon that you can find anywhere in the grass like every new generation since gen 3. Hoothoot isn't there to replace Pidgey, it's there so there's a rare new Pokemon you can find if you look for Pokemon at night. Sentret isn't there to replace Rattata, it's there so the player can find something new early in the game if they bother looking during the day.

No they aren't. Pidgey, Rattata, Caterpie, and Weedle are all still common through the region while other Pokemon are only found in fewer areas and only if you try new mechanics. Think a little bit more before you post.

Part of my point is that Misdreavus being so rare is bullshit to begin with. Its stats are mediocre at best, and its only somewhat unique feature is being able to learn Perish Song, which could have been a cool part of Morty's gym battle. They could have made it findable in the burned tower at night, or something.
But instead they limited it to the last area of the game for literally no reason.

No it's not. It's a special snowflake new Pokemon. So it makes sense to have it as a reward for making more progress through the game.

Being rare is one thing. But having such a mediocre Pokemon unavailable until the literal final dungeon is just ridiculous. Larvitar at least evolves into Tyranitar.

Plus, giving one to Morty would add to its special-ness, having it be this cool Pokemon only the gym leader has.

it was fixed in Yellow I believe, but AI was very exploitable
psychic types were incredibly powerful, to the point that I believe some official said that dark and steel were introduced to make psychic types balanced
rage is a fucking trainwreck; if you get unlucky enough you could actually softlock yourself

If had a much higher base power and said base power went up alongside the user's attack stage, sure, but in Gen 1 it's a fucking joke and you're better off using Hyper Beam or Body Slam, which have the benefit of NOT locking you into only being able to use Rage until the Pokemon faints or the battle is won.

The movepools are completely atroscious. Not being able to use TMs more than once besides the few you can buy really highlights how terrible some movepools are. There is also no move relearner so if you mash A too fast you can accidentally get rid of a high quality move. To me this is one of the only problems that really bugs me about early gens. That and the horrific distribution of new mons. Why is Houndour in Kanto?
