There can be bad open world games and good linear games. A good open world game is one that has meaningful content and gives the player a sense of agency in their actions. It can't just be a large flat plane with things sprinkled around. BotW did its open world so well because there was so much verticality and the physics engine was so fine-tuned. The world was also so vast with a ton of different environments. Exploration was its focus and it excelled. You climb that mountain because it's there, and you're rewarded with a vantage point where you can find your next targets and maybe even a secret or two on the way up.

I think even if Game Freak made an open game, it would still be a bad game. It would be Pokémon GO but you're walking in the game instead of real life. It's not gonna be some big JRPG adventure with Legendaries hidden in secret locations.

The problem is that you're battling through a proxy and the proxies being rendered unconscious is the only way to fail a Pokémon game while the invincible human trainer is free of that. Most open world games have the human suffer the elements.

Canonically, the region isn't supposed to full rookie at the East and full high level on the West.
That's purely for gameplay purpose.
Canonically, a dude can start his journey from Fushia city if he receives his first Pokemon there.

Also canonocally, there is no defined order for Gyms.
Gym leaders adjust the Pokemon they'll use to the level of the chalenger.

He said that the levels would scale on the strongest Pokemon in your party.
That means if you have a pokemon lv50 and the rest lv10, foes would be around lv50.
But if you have only lv10 pokemon, foes would be lv10.

Imo that's a good idea, but there should be some exceptions.
Like some specific areas and trainers with a fixed level, that would force you to wait before taking the challenge.

I don't like it at all. There are many games, like dungeon crawlers, who keep the challenge up by having enemies stronger than you all the time in each floor, but if you look back and return to a previous floor, you find how much your characters have grown even if it wasn't noticeable in the latest area you reached.
If level changes all the time based on your current level, then what's even the point of levels in the first place? Remove levels and/or the turn based combat? Why play Pokemon at all? What's stopping you from picking up a lv 2 team and trivializing the entire game?

As I said, there would be areas and trainers with a fixed level, that would force you to wait before taking the challenge.
And anyway, fighting lv2 foes with lv2 pokemon will always be harder than fighting lv40 foes with lv60 pokemon like most people do by the end of the game....

With level scaling, if you go back to an early route and find a trainer you didn't fight, he will be as strong as you instead of a low level shiter.
Thus you can imagine you met another strong trainer who was traveling the area and challenged him, instead of of it looking like you waited for a rookie to finish his schoolday to take on him...

But you'd have them better implanted (wild pokemon visible on the map and interacting with the environment, NPCs trainers traveling the region and interacting with the environment as well...etc).

The problem with open world is it can go one of two ways.

Finding the perfect balance between the two is something I don't trust Game Freak to accomplish.

that's all I've got for ones that were noticeable to me. Pokemon is pretty inherently based around getting items and battling though, so asking for things outside of the basic concept of the game is like saying Mario games are bad because every level you just run and jump.

Maybe they can take note from the South Park fractured but whole concept. Free to roam but limited to areas as you progress. It also has a unique turn based battling format which would be interesting in Pokémon.
