There's no way a kid who just recently got his pokemon would be able to go against experienced trainers like the Elite Four and Champion without years and years of training. Even with type disadvantages, the Champion's pokemon would already be highly experienced and then there's the Champion being challenged constantly by other actual experienced trainers and so they could easily shrug off attacks from pokemon who just started out. I doubt a kid could even get through all eight gyms within their first year or two.
