For example, you're traveling in this huge open world, and you come across this deserted, eerie forest with creepy music. Instead of just going through it and encountering ghost types, you can get sidetracked and be involved in side quests that enhance the lore of the Pokemon World.
You're trying to get through the forest, and you see a pack of Phantump just eerily floating through the space, the "lost children episode." If they spot you, then instantly attack you.
You can to battle them like in a horde battle. Once you knock them out, you hear the voice of a small child talking about their story, "I was lost one day. I couldn't find mama. I decided to keep walking, and I never found her..."
The side quest begins. The Phantump begins to follow you and it's your job to search this HUGE, maze-like forest until you come across a weeping woman in a cabin. You show her this phantump... the mother realizes she is dead and a Pokemon now... but it's okay. She knows where her daughter is now. She is at peace.
You now have the option
> Leave the Phantump w/ the mother> Go into battle and capture it to take it on your journey with youThe lore has been expanded. The gameplay time has been expanded. The story of how this Pokemon was obtained has been detailed. You leave the cabin and continue through the creepy forest trying to move along...
