That's why my educated guess is that they PLANNED for the gen 8 games to be this holiday, and then only later realized they bit off more than they could chew. Like they ran headlong into developing a big-ass actual modern video game despite not even knowing how to optimize engines in such a way to not cause frame-dropping when there are enough models on-screen (among a battery of other basic tech issues that show they really don't know what they're doing).
So they grossly overestimated their own abilities, writing off modern game design as easy-peasy, and then realized later how much work was actually involved. I'm fully expecting the gen 8 games to end up being co-developed with another studio who'll have to jump in to make it actually work. Probably Monolithsoft, since they seem to be the go-to guys for that kind of thing vis a vis Nintendo games.
