They've been doing this since Gen 3 and even changed the Gen 2 remakes to put this one rival + a friend or friends trend in. Get with the times.

By the way, even if the pattern wasn't obvious with the friends having what is weak to your starter (Gladion's Silvally uses the disc of the starter type that you're weak to like the other rivals) we know this from Game Freak's stand point.

Hau's theme is vs_friend.

Therefore, Hau = Shauna = Ethan/Lyra, = Bianca etc. while Gladion = Serena/Calem = Silver = Cheren, etc.

Kind of, but I feel that the two of them made each other better rivals for you as you went along. Gladion helped Hau take things more seriously near the end, and Hau helped Gladion loosen up a bit/ want to be a rival.
