I'm fine with designs that are based on more abstract concepts, it's interesting as hell that as people create new structures and environments new pokemon emerge to fit those environments. Voltorb looks retarded out in wild grass but rolling down the hallway of an abandoned power plant or say stuck within some power unit it's pretty cool and fits the setting perfectly. They're a literal representation of unregulated electricity. Magnemite has one of my favorite evolutions with how it forms in such a plausible way despite being an artificial creature, and it's easy to imagine one flying around absorbing electricity off of its magnets.
The old designs are great in their simplicity, Muk is an almost abstract pile of toxic waste, like a living Chernobyl disaster, while in the newer games the more complex Garbodor is literally a pile of garbage with eyes and arms. The old gens handled this so much better.
