But seriously though, would any of you respect OS Ash's skill enough to obey him? Ash was a fucking scrub, and Charizard knew he hadn't earned his respect to obey him (for the record, I disliked Charizard especially for having cost him his Indigo League match with Ritchie).

It's not just about badges though, the thing is, Ash's skills as a trainer was beyond shit, with or without badges, the badges were simply a test meant to evaluate his skills as one and would be able to earn his pokemon's respect because of it, but so far, he only earned four of them, god knows how he was going to get past Sabrina without Haunter making her laugh.
