A whole lot of pity stares if you're alone. Best way to play is with friends, if you don't have any, play at night until you reach a good level then go to community days and make friends.

It’ll be incredibly exhilarating and fun for like a month because you’re just starting out. Then, as less and less new Pokémon start showing up for you as frequently, you’ll play it less and less. Still fun, but more fun with a group of friends.

I just started with it too. If you have pokestop near you then it's pretty fun. Made me walk 25km this week. At least that's something different than sitting on my ass.

I remember taking the train to NYC when the first legendary raids were released, it was great.
Would just see big crowds of 20-30 people wherever a raid was.
College isn't as good but generally there's still crowds, keeping in mind I go to a school with ~25000 people.
