So I physically own HG and wouldn't mind reseting my save. Just have to send all my Pokemon over to the Bank. Crystal I don't own, and I know I could emulate it (heek I'm emulating Platinum on Desmume rn), but I kinda want the "handheld" experience if i play Crystal. Also want to be able to then eventually send my Pokemon to the Bank.

Send your pokemon over to Platinum, Diamond or Pearl. That's what I do. I have a Pokemon Pearl cartridge that stores all my gen 4 pokemon.

I think what I'll do first is try out a ROM of Crystal, just so I get the "feel" for it. I played Original Gold a ton back in the day, but I just haven't seen those Gen 2 graphics in ages. I'm unsure whether I want to experience Johto again in its classic or remastered format.

Ah, don't own any D/P/Pt games. Own every other gen but that one.
I like to have all my Pokemon in one of the latest games, so personally, I'd send them to ORAS as I play that much more than S/M.

Hacking your 3ds is super easy
3ds.guide
Plus if you have a hacked 3ds you don't even need to use pkhex. Just backup your current HG save and play with a new save. Whenever you want, restore the save again. If you do decide to use pkhex, it's as simple as dump all pokemon from hg save and inject all of the dumped pokemon into gen 7 i.e. the exact thing that bank does
