A little of both. You suck because you don't know everything about game's mechanics and you should be clearing every floor 100% before advancing. Learn to use items at your disposal. Clear some Makuhita Dojos. Link some moves. Some boss battles may be harder due to type weaknesses but all of them are manageable.
