X and Y and Sun and Moon both had over 2 million sales in 3 days, and USUM had 1.2 million its first three days. Only Emerald and Crystal had worse first week sales as far as main games go. I couldn’t find data for Gen 1 or GS, but they almost definitely sold better as well. Japan doesn’t like third version rehashes or genwun; they typically vote newer pokemon as their favorites
