The rebuttal would work if not for older games having legendaries be average leveled or harder to find/catch in the main game.
But then Gen 5 and the 3DS games changed things by having legendaries just walk up to players begging to be captured in the middle of the main game.

And for reference for difficulty comparison purposes, the ones I already did were: Flying on fire red, psychic on heart gold, water on omega Ruby, steel on Platinum (only game I'll repeat bc fuck vanilla D/P), Dark on Black (my hardest so far), Fire on Black 2, Fairy on X, Rock on Sun, Dragon on Ultra Sun. Gen 3 and 4 both had this. You had to defeat or capture the version legendaries to continue the story.
USUM did not, except for Necrozma appearing on Victory Road as an optional encounter; the mandatory fights with it don't let you capture it.

They really aren't. Totems are not challenging, you just need to keep using whatever move you have on then while ignoring everything around. You don't need an strategy other than type effectiveness. U-Necrozma is the hardest thing in the game, but if you didn't disable exp. share when you got it, it's a piece of cake. The game is only challenging if you disable exp. share, try to kill everything, don't use Z moves and get answers wrong on trials, but at this point you are just making it artificially hard and might as well just nuzlock it.

Sinnoh Elite Four in Diamond & Pearl was ridiculously overleveled. I grinded for hours yet I was woefully underleveled. Bronzong is always a bitch as you gotta guess whether it has Fireproof or Levitate. Then you battle against Flint who has only two fire types despite being a fire type specialist. At least Garchomp is taken down with an ice beam.

Yes, Necrozma was easy if you brought cheese to the battle, but even needing to do that makes it harder than any other boss battle that we've had. In any other game, you could still get by with just mashing whatever your strongest move option was.

While I'm on that, Gen 7, while not hard, did present more interesting battle techniques than any previous gen due to their gimmicks and use of whoever was their helper pokemon. I hope they can incorporate that in future gym battles.

It doesn't take any thought to just slap down an overleveled legendary with stat inflation, in fact it takes much less thought than trying to give some npc a team. It's like if i made the first trial in Alola a Regigigas 10 levels higher than you that calls other normals that can skill swap it. Is it challenging? Yes. But is that fair?

Necrozma was a shit fight because it's not consistent with the rest of the game's difficulty and it involves no good strategy. How are casual players supposed to beat it? Spend several hours grinding until they can survive a hit? And the cheese strategies that pro-players use against it also work against any other fight in the game, since he has no special weaknesses. It's a terrible fight that's only memorable for being so shit.

once again, using mimikyu against ultra necrozma makes the fight way easier, just give it a focus sash and keep the fucker in your team, it deserves it.

The only opponent that came close to this was Norman with his Slakings, and until Game Freak incorporate focused, well-designed puzzles into their in-game battles, Pokémon will never have a satisfying, mature or challenging single-player experience.

Sure, but you can always catch a usable Pokémon. Place helpful Pokémon and TMs near the boss battle. They already do this, but only with regards to type matchups. It would give you a reason to catch more pkmns, and teach kids that there's more to the game than "water beats fire".

Unlike a gym leader a totem is just one Pokémon. So it only needs one mon to counter it. Catch the counter, release it and find a new one for the next boss. Still five slots left for your 'bros'. Additional variety allowed by TMs and multiple pkmn options.

A puzzle can allow limited, but creative, solutions. If you are creative, you will avoid having a team identical to that of someone who is not. What we don't want, is no puzzle at all.

While playing USUM I kept thinking the game was reading my inputs because it just felt like the boss fights knew what move I was going to use and when I was swapping out. During that fight my thoughts were confirmed. I remember having my Raichu and it using Psychic on it and sending it into the red. My plan was to send out incineroar have the psychic do nothing and get a free turn out of it. Problem was when I swapped out they didn't use psychic they used power gem 1 hitting my incineroar. I swear they bumped up the difficulty for the boss fights on these games.

a swampert with surf is bulky enough to go through most of its team, the cradily may be a problem but any steel type can help.
I choose blaziken at the time and never had any trouble.

Colosseum as a whole was really fucking difficult if you were a kid at the time. The double battle format, lack of team selections, ability to grind and overall AI difficulty were far tougher then the handheld games.

I never wound up beating Colosseum but I did wind up beating Gale of Darkness. In Colosseum I made it to the part where you fight one of the Cipher admins in one of their labs and he used a Suicune. That Suicune wrecked my shit as a kid and I never beat it.
