The ONLY reason europe got ahead was because it was able to colionize the americas and the resulting cash influx and intellectual stimulation resulted in a huge economic boom, the enlightement, scientiffic revolution, and the industrial revolution. And the colionlization of the americas itself was in fact largely enabled by those latin american city-states and empires who assisted and did most of the work for the Spanish. Even with native armies doing the vast majority of the fighting and smallpox doing black death level shit, it took decades for mexico to be conquered.
Plus, before then, Cortes happened to find shipwrecked spainards who had learned maya languages to act as translators, one of the moderately large native states he came across that defeated his men easily decided to spare him and to ally with them to use against the larger aztec, the Aztec themselves decided to allow cortes inside their captial on a whim as well, cortes was barely able to convince a spanish force who arrived to arrest him for treason (since Spain never authorized Cortes's actions) to join him in his siege against the Aztec instead; and one of the men in said force happened to be infected with smallpox etc.
Had any one of those things not happened, he'd have failed, and without that intial success and the intial massive money influx from the Aztec' tributaries now going to spain insteads, Spain never would have been convinced or been able to pursue further widespread conquests, britian and france never would have gotten jelly etc.
