I think most of the Lillie hate is actually just cutscene hate.
She is a bland and inoffensive character, so I can't imagine it's anything she actually said or did.

I like Lillie as a character, but I think it's stupid to have non-pokemon trainers as main characters in the story. Is the point just to have someone feeble to protect? It's hard for me to imagine someone abstaining from being a trainer, or having at least one or two battle ready pokemon on them at all times.

It was kind of weird, yeah, but in USUM she becomes a trainer at the end of the story and can even be your partner in the Battle Tree.

Except you still can't battle her. They could have made her an opponent in the battle tree, and given her a team that wasn't just fairy types. They could've even given her her own battle theme, since there are like four remixes of her theme already. But they didn't. What a wasted opportunity.

Yes, but she's still a bland and inoffensive character. I'd say she's pretty forgettable and am genuinely surprised by how much /vp/ hates her.
I found Hau to be a lot more annoying for most of the game, although I liked him after Lusamine when he started acting like a friendly rival instead of a lazy sidekick.

Wanting is way different from trying, he doesn't even try to beat you. Every time he just assumes he is a fucking failure and never tried to improve. Also, Gladion is just an angst teenager that becomes friendly.

Yes he does, in the postgame he beats Hala in the elite four to challenge you, and starts using a Crabominable to show what he's learned from him. And of course he tries, he just never wins because you're the protagonist.
