There's literally nothing wrong with it so far. Visuals look like they should, cartoony and vibrant but easy on the eyes. Gameplay is pokemon and not Go, I'm sure they will introduce stuff that fucks it up but they haven't yet.
They still need to remember how to make games at least on par with gen 4 before they even think about doing whatever open world retarded shit you wanted.

I think its the opposite. All the pessimists are the boomers who have been watching Game Freak use the same formula over and over again and never attempt any kind of evolution. 19 yo here, Kalos was my first gen in 2014.
I liked XY, ORAS and SM because of the aesthetic of these games. When I saw LGPE, I was disappointed. No sleek graphics, no interesting design.
I thought gen 8 was gonna be better. And what I got was shit-colored, Unity indie game-tier world. And that is after the tropical locations of SM.
They've given up, that's it.

There is no denying that it's lazy (Gamefreak, duh). But even ORAS looks better than LGPE and SS.
Vibrant colors, sharp models. Not washed out and stretched out.
