It seems to branch out towards the middle of the map above the lakes. The layout is probably about as linear as Johto.

It's literally a rectangle.

In my opinion they started this design with Portugal and shifted mid way without changing the shape of the map.

Unova is only as much a literal circle as Kanto is a literal square.
The shape of the region means nothing, it's the shape of the places in it that matters. Alola looks like four islands, but almost every place in it is a straight line.

It's only a straight line if your character's body is miles wide. From a distance most things look simple and boring, but once you're roaming those cities and fields I think the linear feeling goes away.

Gen 1 had options as soon as you got to lavender town, you could basically do Erika, Sabrina or Koga in any order you want

Same with Gen 2 where you could go do Jasmine and Chuck or Pryce & Team Rocket in any order depending on which direction you take
