It was a half assed attempt at immersion. Game Freak needs to make the environments much larger if they want Pokémon walking around in the wild. Having a narrow bike path in the middle of a developed region full of horses and rats everywhere just looks silly.

That's the point.
Overworld encounters was a good thing, but iot looked like ass in LGPE because of the small map.
Thus, they should have kept it for Gen 8 and expanded the map so it would work better.
But nope, let's go back to small ass maps and grass patches...

it's not a change to core mechanics, though, because the lets go games are not mainline games. they are spinoffs. they weren't immediately removed, they were just never a part of the mainline games to begin with. use your brain or drop the forced contrarianism.

Overworld encounters go against the very idea of what Pokemon should be about: surprise. You don't know what you're gonna find in the grass.

At least with REs as is, who knows what I'll find.
Look at those shiny fails for LGPE where someone goes for the shiny that spawned, only to walk right into something else they didn't see spawn because it was smaller and harder to see.

Only because it was a small ass Game Boy map.
In a good, non-lazy game on Switch, you would have a large wilderness with wild Pokemon there and there, and you'd have the "surprise" when, you'd stumble upon one while exploring.
But obviously it would require that GF abandons the narrow corridor routes....

I liked random battles being gone, but I also didn't like having the models just casually swerving around in zig zags and getting caught in a corner. I also like the sense of surprise in discovering new pokemon if it's a new game.

I reckon it was dropped because they were both in development at the same time, so they didn't bother putting it in Sword/Shield because they were unsure of the reception it'd get in LGPE. Shame too since it was the only thing LGPE actually improved on.
