This isn't even a matter of personal taste or opinion - the series has been getting consecutively more linear and designed as a series of "gimmick routes" with each progressive entry from gen 5 forward.
It answers the question of how Gamefreak, a studio with minimal experience in making HD games and which has a record of tech issues, was able to turn around a new entry so quickly: the region is the smallest in the series, and will probably only have about ~50 to 60 new Pokemon, and also runs on the same engine as Sun & Moon. It's not surprising at all, but it IS disappointing if anyone was expecting Pokemon to pull a Mario Odyssey or Zelda BOTW and listen to fan feedback to create a more exciting experience.
