That's a valid reason but that doesn't change the fact that it's going to be a slog to explore. Once you've seen the pokemon the game offers, the magic is gone. There will be a zubat situation where random encounters will fuck the pacing in later playthroughs. Repels are not a solution.

Random encounters are good because there's more active gameplay behind it. Instead of standing still and just waiting for the pokemon you want to fall into your fucking lap you actually have to look for it. You're also forced into combat situations you're not guaranteed to be able to get out of creating a more difficult game for the simple fact that more shit has a chance to try and beat you up. Not saying random encounters are the epitome of difficulty in games but enemies you're forced to engage are a lot more threatening than enemies you can just walk around.
