I'm gonna be honest, I don't understand why following Pokemon aren't there.

It's not because GameFreak is lazy. They did it in LGPE and that was their laziest game by far.
It's not because the hardware can't handle it, which is presumably what kept it off the 3DS games.

I genuinely can't figure it out. I am convinced that they just turned it off in the build they used for the trailer so they can reveal it later, because nothing else makes sense.

Literally what did GF do that'd suggest they'd do this. Everyone blames them for everything yet they don't do simple shit like this wrong at all. It's all just subjective "I don't like it so it's bad!!!!11!!1!1"

They have explicitely said in the past that they remove features so that each game can be unique.

I am 100% sure that following Pokemon were planned for SM and possibly even XY. Characters constantly refer to your lead Pokemon as if it was out with you. Hau even has a special animation for the first few battles where his starter was already out before the battle started.

The trailer says nothing about it. You could put your following pokemon back into it's Pokeball (meaning nothing's following you) in LGPE. Also, there's an overworld Munchlax in the trailer that seems pretty close to the battle model. If anything, it either says nothing or points slightly in favor of it.

Oh, I didn't know this. Iirc HGSS had them out all the time so I assumed LGPE was the same.

Well, yeah. SM had that too. There's no reason not to use the same model.
