When are people going to shut the fuck up about Pokemon games, specifically Gen 8 being linear? There's nothing intricately wrong about a game being linear. On the contrary it could be an open world mess with zero conjunction and it'd likely be equally as bad. Just because you didn't receive your BotW equivalent game yet doesn't mean you have to act like ungrateful sperges.

I agree to an extent. This whole linearity debate is stupid as fuck. Being linear is fine in a game, at least when it come to boss/stage/level progression, in poke terms it's the usual formula where the gyms are in order 1-8 and there isn't much jumping in the order, which if memory serves only happens in gens i, ii, and iv. People just bitch about that because they think it makes them smart or something.
What is bs is making routes, caves, forest areas, etc that are just straight paths with little room for exploration to discover things like items or find rooms/areas where certain pokemon can only be found, an example I believe is in RS where Bagon could only be found in the cave room with the TM for Dragon Claw. Taking away exploration is just f'in lazy.

linear isn't bad, to an extent all pokemon games are linear and i'm fine with that. the issue is with having nothing of interest to do in the routes. In sun and moon they're mostly just straight lines with the occasional tall grass or item detour.
If you wanna see linear level design *done well* look at Unova. That region is linear as fuck but the routes themselves are expansive as fuck with tons of ways to get around. it's just about making the game feel less monotonous.

I don't have an issue with linearity, and I'd guess most people don't either. Most people just can't articulate their thoughts in any other way, and lump garbage like Alola into the big bucket of linearity and say LINEARITY BAD.

I do generally agree with you, certain game series have gotten worse after going more open world in my opinion (The Tales of series comes to mind) but the Pokemon setting just seems like it'd lend itself well to being more open and exploration focused.
I'm fine with them being linear, but it'd still be nice to try a more open Pokemon game.

That's right, the reason it's bad isn't intricate at all: it's boring because the player has no freedom or sense of adventure.
And you're right that the other extreme would also be bad, but have you ever considered that it could be somewhere in the middle between "hallway simulator 2019" and "Botw but with Pikachu"?

Linear isn't the problem. Being on a preschool safety rope with arbitraty roadblocks every 5 seconds is the problem. There's rarely anywhere to wander off and explore anymore, or even the slightest choice as to what to do next.

It would also be pretty trivial to make some sections of the games less linear though. Take the second island of Alola as an example. It's one big loop anyway, and the first 3 trials could easily be set up to be done in any order by removing some of the forced roadblocks. The fact that they align with starter types means you can have them all at the level of the middle trial and still form a decent difficulty curve with levels assuming a player goes from the advantage to the neutral to the disadvantage. And for the kids who cant decide, you can still have that safety rope directing them towards the easiest one of the three in case they're getting lost.

More routes, more caves, more exploration, more options. It doesnt have to be an open world. It just has to be more.

In gen 1, you had a planned order you could fight the gym leaders in, but if you explored enough you could reach other town and face other gym leaders. That's the key: reward exploration with choice. You can do your adventure the way you want to, but the proper path must be found first.
