That said, I looked them up and it's just playing with kanji, without any real connection to the actual names of the regions.
Unova makes sense. (UNited States OV America is a silly pun that I could see Nintendo of America doing, and "UNO" and "NOVA" are fitting themes). Isshu is just more kanji randomness.
Also, Kalos isn't French for beauty, but I looked it up and it's Greek. Kind of a weird connection but ok.
Alola is just lazy af, fitting for the entire gen.
