GF is facing the same problem iwth JRPGs from the PS2 era, narrow pathways, fixed camera that sometimes doesn't nail the scenery they want to achive, this is the reason why routes, as linear as they are, their linearity is more emphasized by the bad angles and not properly 3d design, which is why also most cities face to one direction, and this is because of that fixed view, these might be on 3D, but you can tell for that, is like the whole region could be ported as a 2D region and it wouldn't lose shape.
