We've reached a point where reducing the number of new pokemon but increasing the variants of old pokemon is not a bad idea.
My only real problem with Alolan forms is that:
1) This concept wasn't introduced earlier, making my least favorite region the only one that's forever immortalized in Pokemon names.
2) It only affects genwun Pokemon.
If they make it a standard thing and they go back to old regions and give them their own forms (or come up with neutral ways to call them), then the idea is a really good one.
