I have a theory about Sword/Shield, the Galar League, the return of Rotation (and maybe Triple) Battles and possibly the new gimmick of this gen, like Megas and Z-moves before

We know from the map and the trailer that new gyms seem like sports stadiums, and their symbol reminds me of Rotation Battles.

So what if gym battles this time always occur in the Rotation/Triple battle format, but instead of just like they were in Gen 5/6, now each pokémon on the battlefield can be assigned "roles" like Attack, Defense and maybe Balanced? Similar to how team sports like soccer/football do with the players.

In-universe, this type of gym challenge could be based on the cover legendaries (Shield for Defense, Sword for Attacking, maybe both together or the third legendary for Balanced), like how Battle Royals in Alola are inspired by the Tapus.

As for how the battles worked, maybe it's like the Totam Auras in Gen 7. For example, the pokémon in Defense position gets a boost to their stats (DEF/SpDEF/maybe HP), etc. This could also make the gyms as challeging as Alola's totems, instead of just the same boring gym battles from other gens.
