D/P:

best region imo, and my favorite games overall. the only legitimate criticism imo is that it's very long compared to the other games and there's a good amount of backtracking. I like that it rewards exploration though

D/P were slow as molasses and the slow, calm soundtrack puts you to sleep. The time when the music does want to be full of high energy "Team galactic battle theme" it's a laughable disaster with weird sounds and instruments used in the sound track. Surf and HP were probably the greatest examples of D/Ps horrid speed. The game also played at 20 FPS at any given time. Mt. Coronet and HMs as a whole are a huge pain in the ass to deal with because you have so many. These games required two HM slaves just to transverse the areas. Defog was also a huge offender.

Platinum sped up the game and that alone fixed so many issues D/P had. Platinum is better than D/P in every way just because it felt like you could actually play the game without falling asleep somewhere along the road.

When people say diamond and pearl are “slow” what exactly are they referring to? Like the story is slow or the game runs at a low frame rate?

The latter. The system is straight up slower than earlier games in the series. Saving your game was the biggest and most obvious offender, where the game would take a significant amount of time to do so under the pretense that it was "saving a lot of data"

the worse part of Diamond and pearl for me was the poketch only having one button. they didn't sort the forward/backward buttons until 2009

Surf speed is slow.
Navigation is slow since run speed is slow and whenever you go through the route dividers you're forced off your bike.
Battles are slow because there is about a half second pause between each text box.
Health bars deplete very slowly if the pokemon has a lot of HP.
Saving is very slow. Saving a lot of data.

In platinum the half second pauses between text boxes are removed, you can ride bikes in the route dividers, and surf speed is increased. The others are still there though, but it became much more tolerable.

Surfing is slower than Gen 3 and Hp scrolls down at Hp/sec. Movement is a lot slower in general. Game itself is great though. I really wish there was more to the Distortion World.

Yeah, much of Platinum is a bit quicker but it all adds up and makes things less grating. The games are still fairly slow, however. Like the only other games close to it in terms of speed are GSC.

Waiting times aside, the 2007 games are still pretty good. I love the route and dungeon design in Sinnoh, as there's a lot of hidden stuff to find along the way. I didn't know about the Wayward Cave stuff at all back in the day to get a Gible, which probably isn't the best thing, but Mt. Coronet has been a treat and I love the routes leading to Snowpoint. I don't have any issues with the dex, I don't need to have a fire type in all of my playthroughs, and I intend to do PBR, Battle Tower stuff and My Pokemon Ranch after I beat the game.
