Yeah, they were only alright, but still so much better than any of the mainline 3D models. I'm just sad. I miss Pokemon. The music really was so much better too. I can't remember a single track from gens 6 or 7, but I remember hating them.

Which is why it's weird how it's mostly smaller devs who use sprites or even hand drawn graphics while bigger devs with lots of money almost always opt for low effort 3D.

The gameplay of Pokemon just looks ridiculous once you abandon sprites and go for 3D models. With sprites, I can abstract away the fact that some grass perfectly hides a giant animal, or that some guy is just standing there. 3D breaks the spell and makes those tropes look retarded and it is harder to abstract them away due to them being more "realistic".

In addition to being cheaper, it's also less labor-intensive to make models, and bigger companies are always wanting to find ways to deliver content as cheaply as they can, compromising with what devs want to do

For smaller devs, they do sprites because of the art
