the thing is there is only so much you can do with the same archetype for literally over 20 years. Theres a reason why they dont look interesting anymore.

the rival can just pick an arbitrary pokemon that is weak to whatver character picks, we dont even need a rival per say either. gyms in gen 5 were better at teaching type matchups. You are making excuses for gf catering to gen 1 pattern nostalgia fags because muh tradition.

The thing is those three types have such a perfect matchup that's not perfectly replicated by any other trio. For Water Fire Grass, whichever starter you choose is:
>Strong against one other starter
>Resistant against that starter
>Ineffective against one other starter
>Weak against that starter
>Ineffective against its own type
>Resistant to its own type

It's harder than you think to get that effective/resistant trio working, and those last two points that make a perfect replication impossible (though you could throw them out to mix things up).

The only other typing triangles that are super effective against AND resist their advantageous type the way you get with Fire > Grass > Water are
Fighting > Rock > Flying
Fire > Steel > Rock
Ground > Poison > Grass

I have been waiting since Yellow version for another unique starter game. So much so that I skipped Gen 5 because I hoped the 3rd version would have a unique non-shit starter.

It goes "Grass/Fire/Water" to teach the new young trainers how the elemental tic-tac-toe works, retarded frogposter. This isn't Pokémon of Honour: Call of Kanto, this is primarily a children's game series and starting off with a nice simple intuitive triangle will always be favoured than your autistic idea of what pokémon should be.

Someone here who is shitting on a non Fire/Water/Grass or a Rock-Paper-Scissors trio tell me exactly what would be wrong with, say, an Ice Starter, an Electric Starter, and a Poison starter? No inherent advantages or disadvantages towards each other, and the boring, overused cycle is gone. I personally think those three types are more interesting than Fire, Water and Grass anyway.

They try to give you a choice to make you feel like YOUR adventure.It fits the lore, because not everyone starts with the same mon. If they only do one starter, they may get backslash that there aren't choices and the one monster they designed sucks. And I'm not talking about old autists, this goes for kids too, a kid may be push it away if they're stuck with something they don't like the first few routes. Pikachu doesn't count because the point was to be an anime adaptation, not your own adventure, this is why you get the three starters as gifts too.

That said, I wouldn't mind a change in the formula. No starters, maybe, the professor could offer your five or six of the "easy for beginners" monsters of the region (the early rodent, the regional bird, etc).

well thats the direction they need to go, One cool idea is to have starters that have extremely unique HM type moves that dosent take a move slot. for example if you get the ghost starter you can explore through walls etc

that, or as another anon said, introduce a new eevee that evolves into any type based on what it kills etc
all of this is better then stupid ass mega evolution and armored pokemon
