For me it's old charming, new impressive yet sterile. They're both good and I'm glad I was around to enjoy the less polished product. New Pokemon being created is still great for everyone.

I have the artbook and I'm honestly surprised Sugimori's current style looks more like his pre-Pokemon style. Round bright eyes and long limbs.
Makes me think he was just faking it for the sake of art direction and changed back to cutesy art when he stopped being comfortable.
