How do we know following Pokemon aren't in Sword/Shield? LGPE had the option to turn the feature on or off. It could have just been off in the trailer.

either no follow in this gen, or it will in the console companion game, it goes like no, no, yes/remake, yes/remake, no no...etc
also note this pattern only applies to mainline remakes and companion console games, meaning the chances of it are basically zero

I'm on the doubt side aswell, but if you had to indulge in even the tiniest hope, there's the fact that many NPCs that would've been in the usual spots had been "turned off" by GF so they could showcase the new areas. It's possible that in addition, they also toggled off the Pokemon following feature for this very reason.

Why do people care so much about following Pokemon? Like whoop de doo it's walking around the overworld bumping into shit. We have Pokemon-amie if you wanna play with them.

It's just a neat feature that adds immersion to the world. This is afterall, a franchise that's about catching and befriending critters that grow to become your monster bros throughout your adventures. If other monster catching/taming franchises can do it, why can't Pokemon.

They might have hidden it to hype us later on other trailer, but GF's history gives us more reason to believe that it's not in the game. Better to not count on it and be pleasantly surprised than to have another disappointment.

this is a possibility, considering they haven’t revealed the starters in battle yet & the overworld was devoid of all pokemon, even the stagnant NPC ones that just make their cry when you interact, even the ones from previous gens.

I hope they at least bring back riding pokemon

Not really a plot twist: They don't have them removed, it's actually that they're this far along in development and haven't even begun to flesh out the world.
