I haven't taken part in the discussions before, but there are boons and costs to both systems. I think Pokémon does better with random encounters, at least right now, primarily because I don't trust GF with implementing overworld encounters in a way that isn't braindead or awkward.

I like random encounters. I also like overworld counters. I do not like the LGPE execution of the Pokemon doing nothing but standing around and occasionally walking. Unless they improve upon them, I'll stick with random.

It's a win for everyone else who is sick and tired of being interrupted by random loading screens and dozens of times while trying to explore the map with no intention to battle or catch any wild Pokémon.
