There's not really anything more to it, just pokemon version of nessie.

Is it just that people want simpler starte evos? Last time we had a starter whose final evolution was JUST "element + animal" with no extra theme was Gen 3 with Sceptile and Marshtomp.
Everything from that point on was "element + animal + some other concept"
Even Torterra was "grass + tortoise + landscape" since it had the mountains and tree on its back.

I agree, the fact that pokemon have thematic concepts more than just element + animal (+ sometimes ecological niche) is what makes them pokemon rather than generic cartoon monsters. OP does nothing for me as a pokemon even if it is a 'cool' design.

They quickly moved from just element + animal to element + theme + animal and stuck with it since.

That's fair, the others 7 are very minimalistic where their elemental characteristic IS their secondary trait. Like Venusaur and Torterra are very similar in that they have a giant plant and vegetation growing on them, but Torterra also has an armored look with spikes.

Yeah I fucking hate the themes. It's retarded to me the concept that EVERY Litten on the planet is ALWAYS going to grow up to want to be a wrestler. Like, with Makuhita, his whole thing is sumo, he's a sumo Pokémon, he's gonna evolve to do sumo things. But Litten is a fire cat, he shouldn't be obliged to be anything else besides a fire cat.

These Pokémon species that have some sort of "hobby" stapled onto them to pass off as "personality" are fucking awful. If you're gonna insist on doing this, GF, at the very least don't ruin ALL THREE starters with it.

thats basically what ive wanted for years. game freak, if nothing else, has done a good job at keeping most pokemon as relative blank slates that you can still imagine as a species, but the starters have gotten gradually more "human" over the last few gens and it bothers me. like, i cant for the life of me imagine a pack of wild bipedal heel wrestler tigers living in the jungle, beating each other with steel chairs in makeshift wrestling rings all day while also raising their young, which are small house cats. its funny as fuck to think about, but not something i personally want out of a pokemon

I think it's mostly for the anime. The anime gets a lot of mileage out of their "personality" themes, but the games not so much.

Take the Kalos starters for example, Braixen and Greninja are the two with the most strongly defined themes in their design, and coincidentally they have the most screen time in the show. You'd think it's weird to invest so much focus into streamlining Braixen's design compared to its other forms, it's just a transitional middle stage that most people won't be looking at for long in the games, but when you realize they did it for the anime it makes perfect sense.

Did you mean symmetrical? Empoleon's markings are symmetrical, which is fine by the way. But I'm pretty sure no penguin has dots like that on their chests.

what i meant by asmmetrical is that the coat isn't a perfect reflection, it's higher on one side than the other, i don't think the dots are there for any reason other than aesthetics. i don't think coats have dots like that
also empoleon isn't the only starter to have a small head/face
