They’ll provide a way to collect the existing Mega Stones, as well the Z-Crystals, but both will be ditched in favour of the new held-item mid-battle gimmick that is introduced in SS/SwSh/SnS/shut up, and expanded upon further in the third version, and/or the DP remakes.

On a somewhat unrelated note, even though it’s just a Pokemon game, it still bothers me how badly they messed up the story. The whole Ultra Space segement and climax was pretty great imo, but everything before that is copied and pasted from SM. And then Lusamine’s straight up mentally unstable in this one, considering she never actually got hopped up on Space Jelly’s neurotoxins here.
