So, with all the talk about region sizes, open worlds, corridors, and everything else related to that concerning the new games, I thought I'd finally try and actually objectively quantify just how big and 'free' each of the previous games was.
To start off, some terms. I'm measuring everything using a point based system, going by number of areas that are either Mandatory or Optional, with the following grading system.
1) Routes are worth 1 point, or 2 points if a route is particularly large, expansive, or has a sizable optional area. Kanto's Route 1 would be worth 1 point, while Route 2 would be worth 2 points, for example.
2) If a route is accessible early before it becomes mandatory, it counts as optional rather than mandatory. Kanto's Route 22 is the example
3) Towns are worth 1 point, big cities are worth 2 points. Cerulean for example is 1, while Celadon or Saffron is 2.
4) Caves and evil team hideouts are worth 1 point per floor, so long as that floor has traieners or wild pokemon.
5) Sections of the above that are small singular chambers with minor rewards or vast stretches with nothing don't count towards a score. The entrances to Diglett's cave don't count as a floor since they're so small, and the Underground Path doesn't count as a floor or route because there are no wild pokemon or trainers.
6) Only areas available prior to beating the Elite 4 are counted, as this is measuring the main adventure
Keep in mind that this is still a rough estimate, and the numbers here are for the most comprehensive version of each region.
>Kanto
>58 Mandatory, 36 Optional
Kanto scores very well in the optional category, as the areas of Route 12-15, and the Seafoam islands all have alternative ways around them. Kanto also picks up 11 points from the first three of the Sevii islands, which are possible to skip.
