>>37802080formulas are based upon whats possible to portray within the limitations of the hardware, what compromises are made in creating this world in respect of an 8 bit hardware system. How does this compare to official supplementary art and other media in the franchise? Is it possible that this 'formula' taken for granted in the games, an example being random encounters, is based upon a compromise of portraying more organic environments? Another example is 'cities' comprising of a handful of buildings but, these being a stand in, a representation of a larger implied world. Again compare supplementary illustrations and the manga, anime etc.
So how is it 20 years later when the limitations of the hardware in which gamefreak are working, allow for much much richer and expansive representations of environments and urban spaces more mimetic than simply representational; with all this and we are still getting similar portrayals of improbable environments and unnecessarily tiny 'cities'. Though the games have gotten 'bigger' (arguably not in the last few gens) over time, the sense of scale Gamefreak is working with is still effectively 8 bit.
This shows a disheartening lack of ambition and/or competence from Gamefreak that they show no willingness to want expand their portrayal of a world occupied by roaming creatures, bustling cities etc. Instead we're getting 3D 'long grass' and tiny railroad maps.
