Why does it have to be either one or the other? Why can't we have the best of both worlds? Picture the following:
>you exit the starting town
>you just got your first pokemon
>in front of you lies a vast plain full of grass, trees, bushes, rocks, small hills, etc
>in that plain a bunch of ponyta are trotting in herds
>you also see a bunch of deerling and miltank scattered around while gracing peacefully
>a kommo-o is sleeping soundly near a water stream
>cutting through the middle of the plain there's a curvy paved road that will lead you to the next step on your journey
>you won't have to battle wild pokemon on the road but you notice something else
>a bunch of trainers are pacing around, looking for anyone they can start a fight with in order to level up their pokemon
>you also spot an item lying on the ground a few dozen of meters away from you
>you hope the item, whatever it is, will help you beat those trainers so you head in that direction
>to get to the item you need to cross a patch of unkempt tall grass
>you move quietly, trying not to alert any wild pokemon hiding in the grass
>you make it to the item but it's just a pokeball
>oh well, you save it in your backpack anyways
>you head back to the road through the grass, but this time a wild pokemon surprises you
>you can barely see it in between the tall grass but you can see it is green and heading towards you
>you try to run away but the pokemon is faster than you
>it attacks you and a battle screen opens
>turns out it's a caterpie
>since the caterpie attacked you first it gets the first strike
>it lands a hit on your starter
>the next turn belongs to the caterpie since it's faster than your starter
>it misses
>you decide to run away
>after leaving the battle screen you are back in the overworld and so is the caterpie
>it tries to attack you again but this time you dodge it by pressing B
>you leave the grass and run towards the road
