No one is saying every game needs to be, and not every game is. It just makes a lot of sense for Pokémon since at its foundation it's about player freedom and choice, and the anime has enforced that notion too. Story is an afterthought.

Pokemon doesn't have much of a history about caring about first impressions. Need I remind you the first impression of SM was giving us just a logo, then telling us to wait months before we got more? And even when we did get more, they didn't even mention the main gimmicks like multiple islands, z-moves, ultra beasts, etc.

Sure they can, if we assume "botw moment" means "open world" they could reveal that you can do the gyms in any order, using the trains we can see on the map to get around.
If instead we simply mean a major change up, we actually didn't see much in the way of battles, only something early game, and a mid-attack Lucario and TTar, there was an otherwise trash theory posted yesterday that brought up the actually good idea they could be bringing back and revamping triple/rotation battles for the gyms.

It doesn't matter, as you can still catch them all eventually. In fact you can argue the road blocks can reflect how you can't enter certain areas at certain ages, and you have to wait before you can go in.
