XY were the worst batch of rivals, fucking 4 of them, most of which add nothing to the plot and just act annoying. They could have cut them down by having one male and one female rival and it would have changed nothing.

Barry is a good rival. He's energetic and fun and has actual character development (or at least as much as you can give a rival in a pokemon game)

Honestly Barry was the last rival that I really liked overall. I think Hau gets too much hate, he was way better than all the XY "rivals", but he still wasn't as good as Barry. imo, the best rivals are Barry and Blue.

barry was great because he was the hardest rival we've gotten, a proper challenge and he wasn't a total dick head or a total dick sucker just a friend that you fight
he also has one of the coolest moments in the series when he fights with you against galactic commanders after losing a fight with one
