The simplification and shading are definitely a problem, but it doesn't really affect the series. It is a good complaint, but not one that deters from it too mcuh, other than making it lesser than the other series when it comes to the overall presentation.
The meme faces existed before, yes, but they were amped up to eleven, you have to admit. When they appeared before, it was a "once in a blue moon" situation. Now, it happens in almost every episode. If that's not with the intention to make it fit the SoL/Comedic style they were going for in SM, then I don't know what to say.
