Unpopular opinion: Baby Pokémon were a actually great idea and almost every one of them is pretty cool.

The only reason it went away is because new Pokémon already look like babies and muh megas.

I love baby Pokemon. They're cute, and that's like half the reason this franchise exists.
As a gameplay mechanic, they're fantastic to allow the player to capture Pokemon like Munchlax and Riolu early without having a stupidly OP mon to roll the game for them.

Personally, my favorite baby mon is Smoochum.

I'm fine with Riolu because he was introduced together with Lucario, so it's no different from any other two-stage line, but the other post-Johto babies are just clutter.
The worst fucking part is that you need to have a specific item to breed them because of GameFreak's bizarre fear of retcons.

I remember being a kid and finding out they were adding baby Pokemon and I was hyped. I still like them to this day. They're well designed and make the Pokemon more relatable.

Evolutions are good but pre evos are bad? That makes your base stage mon an evo, so it's like you're not a hypocrite.

Baby mons offer >>37808681 And they usually sell merch better then their older evo does. Meaning they are beneficial for in-game and the company overall. They are a quality of life improvement.

We need more line connecting evos that offer branch evos like >>37808695 mentioned about tyrogue. It's basically a fighting type eevee. Would be a cool early route mon. Extend this treatment to

And you add more variability to end game teams by small changes in early game distribution

I have to explain this every time a baby Pokemon thread comes up.

Baby Pokemon were actually a good idea, but was handled poorly for the most part. Here's why:
The introduction of baby Pokemon allow certain Pokemon lines be introduced earlier in the game, where their base forms would be too powerful. You would welcome or see a fair fight against a Magby or an Elekid around the first or second Gyms, but wouldn't want to be wiped clean by a Magmar or Electabuzz. Those Pokemon are more fit for mid-game.
Where this idea drops the ball is how this technique was only really used to its full potential in Gens 4 and 5. Also some of the babies are functionally useless.
Cleffa, Igglybuff, Pichu, and Azurill are worthless dex filler because their base forms are already balanced for early game - they don't need an even weaker form.

Other than that, babies were a fine concept. They just need to be found in the wild, and not something you have to breed for.

really good points but id add that not all baby forms are equal with stuff like pichu being the most superflous (existing purely for merch) while tyrogue on the other hand was sorely needed
