I own Sun but haven't played it.
I feel like playing Gen 7 to pass the time until Gen 8.
Should I just play Sun or is Ultra Sun worth another $40?
I can't hack my 3DS since it's a work benny.

It's literally copy pasted with minor tweaks, it could have been a bug fix with Necrozma DLC and it would be the exact same game.

I'd say they're pretty trivial. Save your $40, the base Sun/Moon experience is fine, no matter what the autists here say.

gen 7 has a bit of a hatebase here, but Sun alone is a perfectly enjoyable experience. Play it and make your own opinions on the game.

Anon, realistically, you'll start playing, and I kid you not, put it down, then promtly forget it exists for months on end, especially if you're always on a charger. It is the most boring and soulless experience I have ever had, and I was hit by a car a few months ago. I'm not saying don't play it, but full disclaimer, I gave you fair warning.

XY wasn't lazy. They had to create 3D models from scratch and laid the groundwork for future 3D games.
ORAS, SM, and USUM did nothing with that groundwork and instead did their best to be as lazy as possible.

SM has a pretty decent plot, and is why I always recommend it over USUM. It still all depends on what you want from a pokemon game though. Totems are good too, if you dropped it before Mallow's trial I'd definitely recommend at leaat that

The game gets a lot better the further into the main story you get. I can't stand the first island, but everything after that is pretty enjoyable, especially the third when Team Skull gets more involved.
