I’ve got way more coins from that than I ever did with the gambling minigames. All it takes is some basic thinking and avoiding anything that could only be a 1 or a bomb and only going for the 2,3 and 4s

Git gud but unironically. Voltorb flip is mostly skill with only a few true luck based decisions per board (unless you get a shit board with no free rows which are bullshit and you have to guess on the first flips)

The big trick to playing the game is just completely ignoring rows that are all 1s and voltorbs since they don't matter at all. What I would typically do is flip all the tiles on a row that has no voltorbs so I know what I got, then I look at all the rows where the either the number of coins and number of voltorbs adds up to 5 OR if I know what a number is from the free row and I know that the rest of the cards in that row can only be 1 or voltorb, and I mark those to ignore them. Then from there I start picking cards that cross between rows with the highest coin count and the lowest voltorb count since those always seem more likely to be a 2/3 coin card. And keep going and picking cards that are likely to be the safest while marking off rows when I realize they can only be 1s or voltorbs. If you can also figure out what all the voltorbs are on a row that's usually really useful because that can let you know what all the coins are on other rows and before you know it the board is cleared

It also sends you back to levels based on how many cards you flip. If you're on level 5, flip 2 cards then get a voltorb, then it'll send you back to level 2.

Also I wouldn't really bother with the calculator at all. All it really does is give you exact probabilities and doesn't actually tell you anything you can't figure out yourself easily. It doesn't even bother with figuring out what rows are all 1's and voltorbs either which makes it harder to clear the board up.

Doc also managed to learn Pursuit naturally (somehow overlooked that one when checking his move list!), so I'm gonna be able to hang on to the Payback TM until I need it for the E4 and not have my moveset gimped by superfluous Dark coverage up to that point!

Though, I gotta say, I'm not looking forward to the Olivine/Cianwood stretch at all. Beedrill's only coverage option versus Steel is Brick Break (Frontier TM) and Rock Smash (40 BP HM which will take up a moveslot until the Move Deleter in Blackthorn), and its only coverage option versus Fighting is Aerial Ace, which is Waterfall-locked. Probably gonna have to grind to 37 for Cianwood to get Poison Jab just to have a half-decent neutral damage move. Mid game is gonna be a struggle!

Question to funmon solo runners from someone whose favorite part of Pokemon is team diversity and having a variety of different playstyles at your disposal at any given moment: Doesn't it ever get boring? How do you keep an entire playthrough interesting while only using one Pokemon? Is it really the feeling of overcoming a seemingly insurmountable challenge with a weak little dude? Because I think the idea of this sounds fun on paper, but I can't imagine using the same Pokemon with the same four attacks, looking at the same backsprite, over and over and over again without mixing it up. I'm not trying to shitpost or tell anybody that their way of enjoying the game is wrong, I just genuinely would like to hear some opinions on what makes it fun for you guys.

I think that's a perfectly valid question to ask!
For me, funmon soloruns have breathed a new life into playing Pokemon for me, I was so burned out for a while, trying to do challenge runs, nuzlockes, anything to try making things interesting. Doing these funmon runs have been a lot of fun to do, raising your lil' champion from scratch and conquering an entire region with them, adding as much or as littlr difficulty as you want depending on what would be the most fun.
For me, I definitely love doing runs that are just a masochism rollercoaster, but I've also had a lot of fun doing some runs that were less harsh
As for your specific questions, I think there's a special kind of fun in building your funmon's moveset to be the best it can be, you only start with the basics and through the run you get Lego on the moves you need to get through the games, for example I've found out just how useful Rollout and Ice Ball are, even on Pokemon like Seedot and Bergmite
And as far as getting tired of looking at the same Pokemon, that's why I've deliberatly chosen Pokemon that I either have used very rarely, or not at all, I had never used a Luvdisc, Smeargle, Bergmite or Teddiursa before this, but now I've slowly grown to love them all, with Smeargle it was a good help getting to use Alola Photo Club and Refresh, making me grow even closer (pic related is my lovely Golden Gal, champion of Alola)

This is the part that scares me off, though. I've attempted several Nuzlockes in the past, and each one involved grinding my whole party in low-level locations for literal hours, ensuring that my beloved team could survive anything that threatened them, just to have one of them die to a bullshit critical hit, or self-destruct, or getting randomly ganged up on in a forced double battle, or things of that nature. I've never been able to finish a Nuzlocke because my team dynamic gets thrown off balance and I'm typically never lucky enough to have anything to cover the hole, and all the grinding it would take to get another party member up to par with the rest of the team is just never worth it. I suppose a funmon solo run would be more forgiving since you can just get back up and try again as many times as you want without penalty, but if you have to grind a lot just to make it work, then I'm not really sure. I really do like the idea of having a special "Ash and Pikachu"-esque bond with just one party member though, so I may give it a try if the urge ever hits me, but no promises that I would see it out to the end.

Well that's the beauty of the funmon runs as you kinda get to choose your own difficulty by consulting the list in the OP
If you're someone like me that loves retrying and grinding and barely making it through then you choose a lower-end funmon (BST giving a fairly accurate representation of the difficulty), and if you want something easier (or at least less grindheavy) you choose one of the better ones.

I think you should try a solomon run first, try Pokemon's speedruners use for their runs to try get used to the idea, the best part is that grinding is not that much of a deal, you're just grinding one mon and not an entire team, at some point you'll be 5, 10, or 20 levels over your rivals and you'll be like "Damn this nigga just die to a Spinda"

If you manage to sit through Gen 7's story, I'd say USUM are the perfect funmon games for the reasons you've mentioned (minus emulation), plus Pokemon Refresh and Alola Photo Club for extra special bonding™, and Mantine Surf/tutors for added movepool variety, and if you've chosen an especially fun funmon you also have Z moves to help out

if by "ideal" you mean "the easiest and least challenging" then yes
for me personally the point is having a challenge
if i had reusable tms like in gen 5+ i coul just switch around all the time between hyper beam, aerial ace, water pulse, thief, ice beam, and giga drain
but since tms arent reusable for me it doesnt let just hotswap into whatever moveset is super effective now against whatever i need to cover for

Got a really lucky run against Karen, her Umbreon wanted to Sand Attack me, but missed thanks to Gen 1/2 status move mechanics, and her Gengar cursed me, but Curse thankfully works the same as poison in Gen 1/2, in that it won't subtract HP if you defeat the opponent that turn, now only the Flying type master himself stands in our way (Lance is basically a glorified Bird Keeper in this Gen, change my mind)

Definitely had to eat a couple Hyper Potions and max out my Attack boosts just to get through that. Those Iron Tails were not a joke on my weak Defense. But that's six down now! Two to go- though we've got a long path ahead before number seven. One filled with a lot of Poison types that resist EVERY SINGLE ATTACK I have, and ending with a Houndoom eager to dick my butthole. Hachi and Doc are in for it now.

On the (arguably long) list of problems Gen 7 has, I really wouldn't put "lack of Gum Leader battles" too high on the list (or even at all, personally)
If they had done away with them for good that would've been a problem, but I found Totem Pokemon to be an interesting and fun concept (for one Gen)

Ain't too bad, really. Since it's solomon, you end up being fairly overleveled. The challenge comes in adjusting fire for the few walls that your Pokemon is just not made to pass.

Literally Gen 7's one redeeming feature. My god I love Pyuku so fucking much. Such an excellent Pokemon in concept, design, and execution.

Pyukumuku has grown to be one of my favorite Pokemon, I love the lil' sea potat!
And yeah I was a little tempted to get Unaware, but decided against it. I did breed it with an Adamant nature and perfect IVs, though really I think I'm gonna need all the help I can get

Also, I just had one of the toughest battles I've had in a while in the Trainer School, against the Metapod. It just couldn't do enough damage for me to reflect half the time with Bide, plus it had an Oran Berry, I actually had to reset a couple of times

Pyuks is a little bit disadvantaged, though. For a Pokemon whose entire point is reflecting damage back, GameFreak did it a disservice by making it a defense tank instead of an HP tank. Imagine how much better it would be if it was using its Ability or Bide with 120 base HP instead of 55.

I was wrong, Present can't hit Gengar but Struggle can, so you either pack a lot of potions or use Drill Peck just for ghosts which is completely acceptable imo

Well, moths and bagworms are pretty good, not gonna lie. But Doc has proven that they just can't quite stack up.
(Interesting note: I've been going through the past two battles with only three moves learned. I went to the Move Deleter before this to get rid of Rock Smash. I'll be teaching Payback via TM prior to Karen, but I didn't know if I'd need a different move for the three before her, so I'm leaving a spot open.)

Good lord, Lance, that was quite a battle. It took me five tries to work out a strategy. He lead with Gyarados, which fucked my attack all the way up. I could manage to tank enough (non-crit) Waterfalls to Swords Dance back up, but even with a near-20 level advantage, that Aerodactyl outsped and oneshot me with Rock Slide. I took myself up to +3 Attack and then used an X-Speed while Gyarados was still out, but I couldn't oneshot the Aerodactyl with only +3. So I ended up having to boost all the way to +6 Attack, use an X-Speed, and pour Hyper Potions down Doc's throat while praying for no crits.

Definitely a challenging fight. But say hello to Doc the Dragonslayer! Don't induct him into the thread's Hall of Fame just yet- Kanto awaits!

...That was... fuck. He buzzed off the screen before I got a chance to take a unique cap, but believe me. That was the most hard-fought, miserably reset-ish victory I've ever clutched out. The amount of things I had to get to line up...

Pikachu oneshot me with Volt Tackle, so my only recourse was to use my one X-Defend at the start of battle, then potion spam while it killed itself with recoil and Hail.

Charizard oneshot me with Flare Blitz, so I had to attach an Occa Berry to Doc to give him a chance. But that STILL KO'd if I was at too low a health post-Pikachu, and it S T I L L KO'd if it happened to proc that 30% Burn chance. Had to take a single turn opportunity to Swords Dance while Red healed Pika so I could twoshot Charizard without going down to double Hail damage + Flare Blitz.

Then Lapras started shitting on my parade by being a defensive beast with 100% accurate Blizzards, Psychics I couldn't PP stall through because of SpDef drops proccing, and throwing out Brines to eat through my Potion stores on top of that. Finally had to end up just praying for a crit.

Once those three were down, dropping Blastoise, Venusaur, and Snorlax with Poison Jabs was comparatively trivial. But holy shit, Red. Holy shit. You are the Champ. He'd win 99 times out of 100. Reset button and savestates are all that gave me that win.

Yeah, Swagger was probably the best move in my moveset, though she also did fine with Return, Surf, and Ice Beam! (Return and Ice Beam being switched to Substitute and Blizzard at Red)

I lied - Surge was easy. I've ended up with a gimmicky moveset of Mega Drain/Ingrain/Sleep Powder/Growth that allows me to set up on most things, though I think PP limits and damage output will make it hard for this to be effective in the long term. Thankfully, I should be getting lots of levels from the next slew of trainers, but I'll probably have to backtrack a lot in Rock Tunnel so I can keep doing damage.

If a Pokemon isn't on the list they're either an NFE Pokemon or were deemed too powerful, but you're always welcome to suggest additions/subtractions to the list! And I think Jumpluff is definitely an ok choice personally, it's definitely underused if anything
