I think the overworld looks lovely. It's the first time I've been visually pleased with a pokémon game since gen 5.

However, it bothers me just how empty the world is. Where are the people? Where are the random overworld mons that accompany them?

I remember Lumiose looking pretty empty in the first XY trailer as well, so hopefully it's just because the game isn't finished yet and/or they actively avoided showing too many characters and new pokémon, otherwise the region would look depressing.

LGP/E had NPCs, Alola games had NPCs, I can only assume that SwSh will have NPCs.

It could be that there were Pokemon NPCs hanging out in the cities, but they removed them for the trailer so as not to reveal any new mon yet.

I think this is it.

Like, think of LGP/E where pokemon are hanging out in the city (not the wild mons, the NPC mons).

They wouldn't want to reveal new mons by having them in the background of a trailer.

I think it's based on the coastal outline.

That said, clearly it's not a 1:1 flip of the UK. The Cerne Abbas Giant (in Dorset) is located in the middle of Galar. And Galar "London" is surrounded by snowy mountains whereas real London is one of the warmest parts of the UK and it's in a river valley lowlands.

Because it is. The map's coastline, PokéLondon's placement and the lakes match real-world Great Britain better if you flip the map.
Of course, the region is just INSPIRED by the UK, not supposed to be the countries literally, so GF took a lot of liberties, like putting snowy mountains on south England and Wales, the same way they put mountains on New Jersey and deserts near Paris and Manhattan.

Unless you get to the Shetland Islands or Orkney, or are next to Ben Nevis, there really isn't THAT much difference. Architecturally, we made all of the same buildings way back when and it's very similar. It's like Glasgow still has the same shitty houses that you'll find in London or any inner city area. Similarly, with the villages, you get quaint little hamlets with thatched roofs everywhere.

In Galar's map that ENTIRE frozen area plus the mountains behind PokéLondon are supposed to be southern England and Wales. You don't seem to realize that the map is distorted due to perspective. The top area appears smaller because it's farther away than the bottom area.
The ice city is the only settlement located where real-life Wales is. The north and middle big cities, as well as the surrouding towns, are England, the industrial city and everything south of it is Scotland.

In Alola nearly every house was inacessable and you could only enter in public facilities.
It would contribute to the comfy and relaxing part of the game to be in an utopistic society where you can just enter peoples home and talk to them

Honestly hasn't been like that for decades, unless you live on the west coast. Ireland has it far worse in terms of gloomy weather, but people give blowies to the Emerald Isle and think it's under a permanent rainbow stewarded by leprechauns.

For me, it's that it doesn't stand out stylistically, either as a game by itself, or as a Pokemon title. When I think "Pokemon's art style," I think of things like Sugimori's watercolours and the trainer card art from the TCG (pic related). I do not, and have never thought, "Tales ripoff."

They had an opportunity to really make something of the games artistically and they chose not to take it. I can respect that from a business standpoint, because people are certainly lapping up this unremarkable tripe anyway, but I cannot respect it creatively.

With a non-flipped map the scottish characters would have to travel south to reach London (the big endgame city). So I guess GF thought it would be better to start the journey at the "bottom" of the map and then go up, until they reach the "top".
It's the same reason they flipped Hoenn 90 degrees, to make the navigation better.

Ackshtualy, the region seems to be divided in 4 different districts, each with their own flags and probably pokedexes like Kalos and Alola, so there's at least an ingame reference to the fact GB is made up of different countries.

Galar has a similar refreshing feel to it and people here do appreciate that, especially after USUM and LGPE
