I get the whole western/chinese/japanese theme with the Gen 5 starters but it really feels like they didn't knew where to go with the evolutions.
Emboar is great desin wise but everyone on /vp/ was mad back then (rightful imo) that we got the third fire/fighting starter in a row.

Which is a shame.

Samurott has a polar problem. It just feels like a cop out to have a Pokemon which is fine by itself but that almost has no resemblance at all which the prevos.

Honestly I think the current pokemon will end in a similar way:

Sobble as a quadruped semiaquatic creature
Grookey just a monkey (not furry shit)
Scorbunny a bipedal pokemon with subtle human reference in its design (sports)

Johto/Hoenn have the best first and middle stages in my opinion. Can’t decide which gen has the best final stages because I do have some favorite starters, but when I look at each gen in general they just feel meh to me.

The Gen 8 starters interest me so far, I'm liking the first stages right now. I'll just have to wait and see if they don't disappoint once the final evolutions are revealed. But for now, all the Gen 4 starters are fantastic and everything after hasn't rivalled them since.

What does putting effort into the themes of starters even means. Before Gen 5 they didn't even have an unifying theme, and before Gen 4 they were just cool monsters.

They couldn't put effort in the themes if those weren't a thing in the first place.
